Losers of seven straight games, the Thunder will look to end their season-high losing streak on Sunday evening in Reading. The R-Phils have taken the first two games of the four-game set, despite the Thunder holding leads in both games. Trenton is heading in the wrong direction as the team winds down the first half. The team is out to a 1-8 start in the month of July. After these final two games at FirstEnergy Stadium, the Thunder will welcome the R-Phils to Waterfront Park for a four-game set starting Thursday after a two-day All Star break.
LHP Steve Garrison will make his ninth start of the season Sunday and his first career start against the Reading Phillies. The lefty last worked on Tuesday in Richmond in a relief role as he resumed Monday’s suspended action. Garrison took the loss on Tuesday, allowing four runs on nine hits in Trenton’s 5-1 loss to the Flying Squirrels. After missing almost two months due to a groin injury, Garrison returned to the Thunder starting rotation on June 25 and has gone 2-1 with a 6.60 ERA in three appearances.
RHP Joe Esposito will make his fourth career Double A start Sunday as he faces the Thunder for the first career time. The righty made his Reading debut on June 25 and has fared 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in three starts. Esposito last worked on Tuesday against Bowie and picked up the win. A former Orioles’ farmhand, Esposito was signed by the Phillies as a Minor League Free Agent in July of 2010.
