After a rough Tuesday at The Diamond, the Thunder will play a doubleheader Thursday after Wednesday’s postponement. The Thunder will need to sweep the doubleheader today to salvage a series split in Richmond. After this four-game set in Richmond, the Thunder head to Reading for four games to wrap-up the first half of the 2011 season.
RHP Dellin Betances will get the nod in game one for the Thunder, making his fifteenth start of the season. On Friday, the righty gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings in a no decision at home against Altoona. This is the righty’s first career start against the Squirrels.
RHP Craig Heyer will pitch on four days rest and make his fourteenth start of the season. Coming off back-to-back solid outings, Heyer will make his second start against the Squirrels this season. In April, the righty out of UNLV hurled five shut out innings at The Diamond. Heyer last worked on Saturday when he lasted five innings and did not surrender a run on three hits.
LHP Ryan Verdugo will make his sixteenth start of the season as he gets the nod in game one for the Squirrels. The lefty started on April 18 in Trenton and received a no decision in 5.1 shutout innings. On Saturday, Verdugo took the loss in Reading, allowing six runs in five frames.
RHP Justin Fitzgerald will take the mound and pray for clear skies in game two. His last three outings have either been suspended or postponed by rain. This will be start number 17 for the righty out of UC-Davis, who has hurled three innings combined in his last two outings.
