The Thunder will welcome Phil Hughes to the team tonight in New Britain as the team looks for its second straight win. Currently on the season’s longest road swing, the Thunder will play the final three games of this nine-game trip against the Rock Cats at New Britain Stadium. Twice so far on this trip, the Thunder have staved off a sweep by winning the final game of a series, winning Sunday in Binghamton and Thursday in Portland.
RHP Phil Hughes joins the Thunder to make a rehab start on his 25th birthday. The righty will make his second rehab appearance in the Yankees’ Minor Leagues, looking to regain his Big League form that netted him 18 wins in 2010 and an All-Star selection. Appearing with the Staten Island Yankees, Hughes pitched 4.1 innings on Sunday in Brooklyn. In his Thunder career (2006-2007), the California native is 10-3 with a 2.20 ERA in 23 starts.
RHP Bobby Lanigan will make his fourteenth start of the season tonight for the Rock Cats and his second career appearance against the Thunder. In his last start, June 16 in Altoona, the Staten Island native took the loss despite hurling 7.1 strong innings of three run ball.
The Bank of Princeton’s Hank’s Take it to the Bank: Phil Hughes will allow less than two runs in his rehab start. Season Stats: 27 wins, 40 losses (streak: L2)
